Welcome to Second Grade

Welcome to the 2010/2011 Religious Education year!

This is a place where you can keep updated with what we are covering in your child's second grade Religious Ed Class and create conversation at home about what is happening in our class.

Each week we have class, I will post an update about what we learned, hopefully some pictures, and the homework assignment.

In addition, you can find important links on the right side of the page.

I love to hear from parents, so please consider commenting on the posts to develop a dialogue between families.

I look forward to working with your family this year!

VBS-Day 4

Today we enjoyed another fun and learning filled day of Vacation Bible School.

We learned about the story of Peter and John teaching about Jesus and Peter curing the crippled man. We saw this story come to life in Bible Voyage, made a craft to reinforce the story, discussed the story and how we would feel, played games to remind us about the story, and of course sang and danced!

We look forward to seeing you at noon on Friday for our performance, slideshow and dessert and then again on Sunday at 9:15 Mass.

VBS-Day 3

Today we had another fabulous day on our high seas expedition! Even though we started off with stormy weather on the seas, the sun came out and we were able to sail clearly!

We learned about Paul after he got shipwrecked on the island and how he didn't die after getting bitten by a snake. Our Bible Point was "God is surprising!" (Land-Ho!) We learned all about this story in Bible Adventures, made surprising Bopper Poppers, saw Chadder in his crazy adventures, and played some ship wreck games outside! On top of that we ate yummy snake snacks!

We have also been practicing our songs and look forward to singing them for everyone on Friday at noon and Sunday at 9:15 Mass.

Here is the slideshow, enjoy!

VBS-Day 2

We had another fabulous day on our High Seas Expedition today!

We got in a boat and survived a terrible storm in Bible Voyage today! There were even cool waves! In Clipper Ship Crafts we made a Comfort Pillow because God's Word is Comforting! (Land-Ho!) In Chadder we talked about our God Sightings and saw what craziness Chadder got himself into. In games, we went fishing with our feet and swabbed the deck in an obstacle course. One group made us snack and then we ate yummy Chip Dip Wrecks (chips, cheese, and Ranch dip). On top of all that we sang our songs and danced ourselves silly!

T-shirts and CDs are still for sale before and after the program each day.

There is a slideshow below. Just click play and enjoy!

VBS-Day 1

Today was the first day of VBS and we had a fabulous start to our week!

We played getting to know you games outside, the preschoolers made snack for the whole group, we made decorated pouches to carry our Bible Buddies and nametags, we watched a movie about our friend Chaddar the Chipmunk, and got to experience how Peter felt when he was in prison. On top of that, we sang and danced and prayed all together!

Check out the coloring sheet the kids brought home today to read the Bible story as a family and practice our Bible Point and Bible Verse of the day!

Here are some pictures to get a taste of what we did today:

The Mass and Taste Testing the Bread and Wine

Today we had a very eventful class! We focused on the Mass and we each brought home our very own Mass Book. These books are great to bring to Mass on Saturday/Sunday to help follow along. We practiced using the Mass books as we went through class today. Miss Stephanie was the "priest" and we all practiced saying the parts of Mass together.

Miss Stephanie's view of us from her "alter" (chair) as we followed along!

Most of us took our turn saying the Our Father in front of the class today. A few of us decided to take our turn at our last class on March 13. Those of us that took our turn today did an awesome job!

We also brought home our rosaries today. We have practiced using our rosaries throughout our year. We talked about the proper way to hold a rosary as well as practiced saying the Hail Mary and the Our Father.

The most anticipated part of the class today was having the chance to taste the bread and wine before our first communions. EVERYBODY tried the bread AND the wine. Miss Stephanie was very proud of us. We practiced the important parts of taking communion:

-stand quietly in line thinking about Jesus
-hold your hands together in front of your chest (left over right)
-bow your head before you receive communion
-say "Amen" after the minister says "The Body of Christ"
-say "Amen" after the minister says "The Blood of Christ"
-sit down in your seat quietly and say a prayer

We encourage everyone to take the wine during the First Communion. Also, Miss Stephanie encouraged everyone to sip the wine out of the chalice.

Check out the slideshow below. There is a picture of each of us tasting the bread or the wine!

Homework:
-Review the "Lent" and the "The Three Days" chapters
-Keep practicing the Our Father.

Next Class:
Don't forget! Our next class on March 6 will be at Church of the Holy Spirit for a family Mass. Mass will be from 9:00-10:00 and attendance will be taken.

First Communion Books
A note went home from the Religious Ed office with all kids today with an invitation to bring your child's completed First Communion book to our last class on March 13 (please excuse the typo on the date). Books will be checked on that day and also at the Reconciliation Masses.

March 13 is our last class!
